Safe & Sacred Space with Leslye, a virtual contemplative space, evolves from a collective of inspiring pauses. Great insight can be gained from the lived experiences of others and ourselves. Aware of their responsibility for the spiritual wellbeing of their children, my parents would not have become Catholic in my hometown’s only parish without experiencing safety and sacredness. For me, the two terms are intertwined. Leslye’s Labyrinth is the blog through which I openly share my lived experiences as a Catholic woman in a Black body. The practices of my writing and your reading may lead us to the threshold of transcending imposed structural divisions. Safe & Sacred Space with Leslye is the threshold from which we engage in dialogue on my writing. In November 2024, many of us were halted in our tracks upon learning the outcomes of our national elections. Some people reached out to me because of their love and concern for the safety and well-being of persons who dwell on the margins of our society. More than one year later, others remain oblivious to the intentional cruelty. I find myself thinking of my African ancestors who were kidnapped, survived the Middle Passage only to set foot on unfamiliar ground and find themselves enslaved as chattel with no recourse as their involuntary labor built what would become a new nation. Also, I am mindful of the peoples of the First Nations who encountered settlers and colonizers who saw Turtle Island as a land of resources to nurture their greed and elevate their sense of self-worth. Both of these peoples were acquainted with intentional and cruel chaos. Tragically, there were far too few settlers and colonizers with the integrity and courage to speak against the grave injustices that were to become systemic. Five-hundred years later, we, the descendants of these people are here. Many of us are being reminded of the intergenerational trauma we embody. I believe our being present to each other in a safe and sacred space is a balm for us, a potential source of healing, individually and collectively. Together, we are reminded that we are not alone. Together, we sustain each other. Together, we experience an ineffable presence and strength.
