At This Time

I recently changed the tagline for Leslye’s Labyrinth from “writing from my African-American Catholic heart” to “transcending my African-American Catholic heart.” The change affirms my sense of personal growth, the nuance of spiritual clarity, and the mystery of the unknown. While my lived experiences unfold within the context of my being a woman who is African-American and Catholic, my heart transcends boundaries, real and perceived, as it is liberated by grace.

I received two invitations over the past month to speak/write specifically from my experiences as a Black Catholic woman. On the evening of May 8, I read my words aloud and was surprised by their impact on me. Hearing them literally brought me to tears.

The next day, we met Pope Leo XIV who is of Creole and Haitian ancestry. Two days or so after learning this, how are you? I find myself pondering it. Even with my new tagline, at this time, I want to engage in conversation with other Catholic women of African ancestry, especially those with lived experience in the USA. Let me know if you are interested.
