The Sixth Day of January

I dozed off
on the sofa
while watching the news
on an uneventful day
in the first week
of the new year,
but awakened
to be bewildered and angered
by live news coverage
of a violent attack
on the U.S. Capitol.

Members
of Congress and
the Vice-President fled
to seek sanctuary
where it could be found
as law enforcement officers
were confronted
by belligerent traitors
filled with hubris and
a sense of entitlement
who defecated and urinated
in public places
with no sense
of shame.

A demented mob
breached one
of the most sacred
and secure buildings
in our nation
as it violently delivered
to Capitol Hill
the “American carnage”
their leader pledged to stop
four years earlier
in his Inaugural Address.

The Capitol Building
of the United States
of America is sacred
because it is a living witness
and memorial dedicated to the ideals
of our democratic republic, and
a legislative forum for the voices
of the people to be heard
through the debate and compromise
of duly elected officials sworn
to protect the Constitution and
in whom the people entrust their confidence.

The con man
with no moral compass
who orchestrated
the lawlessness
had been elected
to serve as President
of the United States
by those enamored
with a fictional image
of a grandiose man
with blonde hair and
the illusion of wealth
in a white body created
for entertainment purposes.

Four years later,
known as a convicted felon
and a compulsive liar
who downplayed
the death and destruction
of that day at the Capitol,
again he was given keys
to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
from where he offered pardons
to the thugs convicted
of committing crimes
against our nation
on the sixth day
of January in 2021.
